Grand Canyon Rim to Rim 2003 (Page 2 of 2)

Continuing an annual tradition, we crossed the Grand Canyon on a one day rim to rim hike. Below are pictures of sunrise on the South Kaibab Trail. As the day goes on, we pass Phantom Ranch, enter a region known as "The Box", and finally begin our climb out on the North Rim. The total hike distance is 21 miles.

The trail includes bridges in a region known as "The Box" (s)

The box area is tightly surrounded by steep canyon walls encompassing our trail and a river. (s)

At this point, the trail continues on the left side along the box. The box runs about 5 miles. (s)

Exiting the box takes us to Cottonwood. Here's the Cottonwood ranger's residence.
It's hot now. Seven uphill miles to go to cold beer and food. (s)
